Centella asiatica |
Centella asiatica, commonly known as Gotu Kola, is a creeping plant with a mild fragrance and is highly valued for its medicinal properties. Found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, its use in food and beverages has grown due to its health benefits. Centella is known for its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and neuroprotective properties, among others. These benefits are linked to the plant’s active compounds, such as asiatic acid, madecassic acid, and various flavonoids. Centella asiatica is known for its strong antioxidant properties, similar to those found in rosemary and sage. This makes it a great potential source of natural antioxidants. According to a study by Hashim et al., Centella’s antioxidant activity (84%) is almost as high as Vitamin C (88%) and grape seed extract (83%). Additionally, Centella asiatica is known for its strong anti-inflammatory properties and is also recognized for its antibacterial activity against a wide range of bacteria, making it an important plant in both skincare and medicinal use.
