Polypodium Leucotomos |
Polypodium leucotomos, a tropical fern native to Central and South America, was initially researched in Honduras for its potential in treating psoriasis. This plant is rich in potent antioxidants and has been extensively studied for its skin-protective properties, particularly against environmental damage such as UV radiation. A 2021 study highlighted that individuals who took Polypodium leucotomos extract before UV exposure experienced a significant reduction in UV-induced sunburn (erythema/redness) compared to those who did not. The extract’s antioxidants, including phenolic compounds and ferulic acid, neutralise free radicals—unstable molecules that accelerate ageing and contribute to wrinkles, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. By counteracting oxidative stress, Polypodium leucotomos helps preserve skin integrity and promote a youthful appearance.
