Resveratrol |
Resveratrol, a natural compound found in red grapes, nuts and red wine offers several benefits for the body, including the skin. Resveratrol, boosts defences against microbes, reduces skin cell overgrowth and inflammation, protects against UV damage, helps prevent skin cancer, fights signs of ageing, and reduces pigmentation. For healthy skin, both the growth and maturation of skin cells are needed to form the outermost layer - this protects the skin and helps maintain its barrier. Studies have shown that resveratrol slows down skin cell growth while encouraging their maturation, helping to create this protective layer. Additionally, resveratrol has antioxidant and anticancer properties. Too much UV exposure can harm the skin, leading to sunburns, skin cancer and signs of ageing, but resveratrol is known to protect the skin from UV damage. Another benefit of resveratrol is that when taken orally, studies have shown that resveratrol significantly reduces dermatitis symptoms and lowers inflammation as well as increases hydration. Psoriasis also responds well to resveratrol as research reported a 50% reduction in redness and scaling of psoriasis symptoms.
